So, I was half watching The White Stripes on Charlie Rose as I wrote the last post and started working on this one at the same time:
Can I just vent about Meg for two seconds? Yes, yes, I know, she's talentless and her primitive drum work is intentional. She's just the muse, I get it, but can she at least have a small percentage of a personality? Poor Charlie is working so hard to get something resembling a response or opinion from this woman and she is giving absolutely nothing. When asked about her influences she cites any music that is "emotional." When asked about her favorite song on the album I'm pretty sure she strung some words but I don't think they formed a coherent sentence and if they did they certainly didn't answer the question.
Wait, did Charlie just roll his eyes?
Okay, so now I'm watching the Stripes' perform "Ugly as I Seem" and two things just hit me: 1. she's playing her bongos so softly that if the camera didn't show her every so often I would forget she was there at all 2. I'm a complete hater and I think all this anger comes from the fact that I'm absolutely jealous of the girl. Her life is fucking rad! All she does is piggy-back off dude's (well-deserved) fame, sit behind a drum kit and/or mic looking stoic and both the pop world and the art haus kids love her to bits.
You know, Jack just made a really interesting point about how he's used all these outlandish costumes, and slick, cool-kid music videos as a way of tricking people into listening to a scary-looking white dude from Detroit playing blues, someone they'd normally never bother with. Well, when you look at it that way, I suppose she's just another trick. But, come on, even tricks need personalities sometimes. Damn.
